Become A Powerful Reiki Master
Yoga is considered a form of moving meditation. It originated from Hinduism more than 5000 years back. It’s a term that encompasses over one hundred different disciplines, but yoga (the Sanskrit word for “union”) as it is commonly understood refers to hatha yoga, a system of physical and mental exercises. Hatha yoga rests on three foundations – exercise, breathing, and meditation – with the goal of joining together the body and mind into a state of balance and harmony.
Yoga has been proven to provide a wide variety of significant health benefits, both physical and mental, including the alleviation and even prevention of digestive distress.
In particular, yoga is an excellent (and enjoyable!) way to manage Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, and relieve symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea.
Yoga also has significant and proven benefits for patients with chronic health conditions such as back pain, arthritis, depression, diabetes, asthma, migraines, and substance abuse.
Yoga has been shown to increase the efficiency of the heart and slow the respiratory rate, lower blood pressure, and contribute to the reversal of heart disease. In terms of overall physical fitness yoga improves posture, muscle fitness, circulation, coordination, range of motion, and flexibility. As a stress management technique yoga is superb; it promotes relaxation, reduces anxiety, and improves sleep patterns. Yoga also helps stabilize digestion, and offer outstanding relief from IBS symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and pain. Yoga is also tremendously beneficial for preventing or minimizing menstrual cramps, which often exacerbate Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
For people with IBS and IBD, yoga is perhaps most helpful for its ability to reduce the stress, anxiety, and pain of chronic illness. Regular practice will indisputably improve your physical and mental fitness, promote relaxation, and give you a sense of control over your health and well-being. As with other stress management techniques, the more you practice, the greater your improvement.
Yes, yoga can be substituted for the gym workout! Those who workout regularly in gym, showed no difference in heart conditions than those who do yoga regularly.
I have been practicing yoga for over 5 years now, and it has helped me a lot. I have lost over 40 lbs doing “power yoga”. There are many disciplines for yoga, but for me power yoga is best because it produces a lot of sweat, builds muscle tone and helps reduce weight rapidly. I lost over 40 lbs with it.

Purpose and use of both Yoga and Gym are diametrically different and opposite.
Yoga is the Spiritual quest, Gym is Physical Quest
If you say only physical twisting of body, that is Yoga!, no.
Yoga is consisting of Eight Fold Path of Patanjali, where it starts with Physical Hath Yoga for making body, healthy, and able to sit in Asana, i.e. Seat, then one has to do Yam Ni-yam, to get the mental will and purification of mind. then Pranayama is for lungs power so that vital Prana is uplifted, and then comes Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi, it is Contemplation, Concentration/Meditation and ultimately Enlightenment. all these eight limbs are en capsuled as Yoga,
But modern age has made Yoga only as a pursuit of Flexible Body with stamina.
and Gym too is for Powerful Body, and Stamina, but it is giving you rigidity of muscles. As you do more work out the muscles get strained but no flexibility is there. Power is there. Unless you are doing Aerobics with Gym, body tends to remain strong but stiff and at a latter age, one become sluggish when the Gym is given up due to age.
Gym is good for building the body fast. but it should be moderately reduced and substituted for Aerobic exercises.
and Yoga purpose is totally different so this makes the question-Answer complete.

A fact yoga is a practice that will give the body strength and flexibility. It is also a spiritual practice that gives you the opportunity to explore yourself in a deeper manner which is what I love about it and has helped me be the person who I am today. Some people don’t see yoga as the spiritual practice but a physical practice I am not one of them. However to answer your question it can be used for a workout in terms of strength meaning not having to use the weight machines but it does not replace cardio so don’t forget about your heart.

I do Diamond Dallas Page’s YRG Workout which is yoga based but he added in strength and cardio movements so I don’t have to go to the gym anymore. You can see the workout online at but if you want the DVD get it on ebay…it is a lot cheaper there. Good Luck!
