How good is yoga anyway?

Nikki asked:

I’ve been thinking about starting yoga to relax and become stronger. I am in shape, but not very flexible…However, I was wondering how strong it actually makes your muscles in the beginners phase?

Yoga will kick your ass! I think it is awesome. Beginner’s phase is still challenging. If you are already somewhat in shape, you’ll quickly move into more advanced poses.

I’m not sure how to answer the ‘how strong’ question. It’s good. The flexibility is important. Getting balanced is a good thing too.

even the beginning class will drastically improve your flexibility. there are some aspects of beginners classes that will work your muscles, but it isn’t going to be more effective than lifting weights. it does, however, strengthen your body more balencedly (not a word :) than weight lifting tends to as in yoga, whenever you work one set of muscles, you follow it by worker the counter balance of muscles. like if you work your abs, the next thing you do is stretch you abs and work your back. this helps keep your body aligned and gives you good posture.

I do a form a power yoga called YRG by Diamond Dallas Page. It is yoga based so you get the flexibility benefits but they added in other movements too that tone your body and strengthen your core. I do the online version at and they sell DVD’s there too. I like that they have a modifitactions section that let’s you make the workout at your own level. Good Luck!
